Connotation Photo Exercise

For this exercise, we were given the task of planning out different ways to capture the emotion or theme within a still image along with using the certain themes given in the booklet. After planning, we then went and captured the pictures that were planned. Along with using Connotations, which gives a different suggestion to a image compared to what it actually is.

Strength



For this picture, the theme was Strength and what we did was using a dark area with limited lighting to give the person a more threatening look and tone to them. With the inclusion of the board they are holding up with their hands within the picture to give the impression of strength. The angle shown to be slightly tilted making it a canted angle and also making the person in the picture looking bigger and using a low angle to represent that strong theme. 

Poverty


For this picture, the theme was Poverty and what we done for this picture is that the person was directed to sit on the floor which gives the impression/tone that the person is poor and hopeless. The setting that the person is in, it is once again it a dark environment with limited lighting which creates prominent shadows on the picture, the picture is taken at a high angle making the person look like they are in the weak point of view to represent the theme of poverty which involves struggle.

Fear/Weakness


For this picture, the theme was Fear/Weakness and to produce those two themes into one still image. The lighting within the image adds shadows which could add to how the theme of fear and weakness through the power of the shadows to represent the lingering cause or reason of fear and weakness. The angle is given at a high angle as it gives the position of the person to be low and weak in perspective. 

Friendship/Love


For this picture, the theme was either Friendship or Love and to create that within the image was instead of using one person like most of the images involved it instead involved an extra person to represent either a friend or partner to go with the theme. The type of shot used for this image was a medium shot as it shows the people within the image from the waist up and conveys the body language and emotion. The angle the camera is at for this is at a straight on angle as it's just a general or normal angle to therefore focus on the people in the image.

Greed


For this picture, the theme was Greed and to represent that within the still picture the angle is low to show that authority and power along with the perspective of the camera's position/angle to represent their ego, the shot is a medium show as it shows the person from the waist up and it prominently shows their body language within the image. The lighting in the image is bright to represent the show off side to Greed as people that have Greed probably want to be the brightest compared to everyone else. 

Loneliness


For this picture, the theme was Loneliness and to create the theme we went to a different environment that involved an empty feel to it, involving no buildings within the shot. The type of shot used within the image is a wide shot as it involves the focus on both the surrounding environment and the person in center. The type of lighting used is Ambient lighting as no extra light is added to the image but instead relying on the lighting in the environment.

Primary research "Primary research is research you conduct yourself (or hire someone to do for you.) It involves going directly to a source – usually customers and prospective customers in your target market – to ask questions and gather information." Unilever Rebranding (Notes)

Unilever is a consumer goods company, first founded back in the 1890's. It's goal is to make their business grow and make their products and business more sustainable so it doesn't impact the environment in any negative way. They also want to present a sustainable and unique to the commonplace. Ben and Jerry's is a Vermont-based ice cream company founded by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield back in 1978. It was sold to Unilever in the 2000's. The main target audience for Ben and Jerry's ice cream is younger people mainly ranging from the ages of 8 to 25 as it's marketing and overall design of their advertising image is unique and creative and the bright and cartoony style of the packaging might attract the target audience.
